Chess24 is an Oslo-based company backed by World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. In fact, it’s owned by the parent Play Magnus Group. The Chess24 app is an online platform to play chess, participate in tournaments and learn. It’s preferred a lot by chess professionals.
In this article, you will learn more about the Chess24 App. It’ll give you a basic idea of Chess24 App.
Chess 24 App Features
There are many features such as playing games with other players, learning chess from videos, chess books and many more.
You can play against humans as well as computers.
When you play against humans, you are paired against someone who has a similar rating to yours. Against computers, you can play at different levels.
First, you’ll need to set up your account on Chess24. It’s very easy and should take you less than 3 minutes.
Once you log into the app, you will find the following sections –
Tournaments to Watch
In the tournament section you are able to see ongoing and upcoming tournaments. Once you click on the tournament, you can check the standings as well as the games of different players. It’s free and you don’t need to buy a premium version for that.
Enjoy all the games from your mobile device. In this way, you can follow your favourite grandmasters‘ live games from anywhere in the world. Sometimes, you might also be able to follow the games of your friends who might be playing that tournament.
On the dashboard, there’s another feature known as ‘Your Games’. Here you can find your rating performance. This is kind of a statistical representation of how well you’re playing. It’ll show you the number of games you won, drew and lost from the total games you played.
There’s also a Play Now button that’ll allow you to pair up against different players in the world.
This is a useful feature for staying in top shape. It has been covered later in the article.
Now let’s move on to the meat of the review.
To access the main features, open the menu on the top-left corner. There you can see the following options –
You can play Bullet, Blitz, Rapid and Classical matches according to different time ranges such as 1 minute, 3 minutes with 2-second increment and so on. You can define your opponent’s strength before the match. There’s also an option to play against both – offline as well as online with engines.
In the analysis section, there are two options available, one is Quick analysis and the second one is My analysis.
In Quick analysis, you can analyze your game and can set up any position that you want to analyze along with the engine, and opening tree features. On the other hand, you can download your game pgn so that you can access your game offline too.
The My analysis feature is similar to My Games. Here you’ll find the games that you analyzed previously.
In the gym section, you can train your chess-playing skills.
There’s a video series available for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. These video series are mostly created by top players, where they share their secrets with interactive lessons.
There’s also a section on chess news. This way you can stay updated with the latest happenings in chess.
Chess24 also has its own Tactics Trainer. It’ll help you to improve your tactical skills. It’s divided into two parts: classical trainer and speed trainer. In the app you have access only to the Classical trainer.
In this, puzzles match your current level and you can choose to receive feedback after every puzzle, after every wrong answer or at the end of a session.
Speed is for all those who need a rush of adrenaline when solving tactics. But this feature is available only on the website.
You can see ongoing and upcoming tournaments here. It’s similar to the Tournaments to Watch section under the dashboard.
Among the professional chess community, chess24 and the FollowChess app is used extensively for this feature.
Now let’s talk about the Free Version and the Premium Version of Chess24.
Subscription – Premium Version
Chess24 has a free version and a premium version. In the free version you can play with other players but you can not challenge top players. You can get news updates, see limited videos and lectures. Premium unlocks a new world of high-quality content.
Under premium subscription, there are two options available i.e. premium and mobile premium versions.
The mobile version costs less than the desktop version. It’s because the features are limited on the mobile end. You can purchase the premium membership which will renew each month or year, depending on the payment option you choose.
One of the biggest benefits of using Premium membership is getting access to content such as opening repertoires, endgame knowledge, strategic tips, and much more from the top grandmasters and the world’s best coaches.
Another important point in support of premium membership is that you can prepare for your next opponent using Chess24’s database.
You get a chance to chat and to play with Grandmasters as they stream their games live. Yes, you can even play against the World Champion sometimes! Although you also need some luck for that!
Here, there’s no limit on the puzzles you want to solve. Your games automatically get analysed. So you can instantly find your mistake and can correct it as soon as possible. You can save this analysis, and can share it with friends and coaches. Along with all these benefits you get exclusive board pieces and sets.
Conclusion: Is Chess24 Worth it for Me?
Beginners don’t need to purchase the premium version. Intermediate players whose rating is above 1800 Elo should buy the premium version. It’s worth using the Chess24 App, because it provides highly structured and advanced level experience. It also runs smoothly, and the user interface is good. Chances of playing against good opponents on the chess24 platform is high. Weigh the pros and cons carefully before buying the membership.
